Maidu Basket
Maidu people range from Mt. Lassen and Eagle Lake (Susanville) in the North to Cosumnes and American Rivers (Placerville) in the South.
This central California range was rich in fauna and flora. Redbud, a colorful native plant that flourished in the region was the principle plant used as a design element in Maidu baskets. It has a rich red color.
The weaver of this basket added an extra element of design by alternating redbud and hazel stitching along the rim of the basket creating a candy cane effect.
